Every
year Canadian Malayalee Association (CMA) welcomes the spring season with “Vasantholsavam” or Spring Festival.
It is a musical and dance extravaganza of the malayalee community in Canada . Vasantholsavam is the “warm up”
festival of CMA’s yearlong activities. Canadian Malayalees welcome the spring season, which comes
after the hectic Canadian winter, with all its sprit and enthusiasm. Through Vasantholsavam, CMA tries to promote multi-cultural
values to its members and integrate them to the Canadian society. Vasantholsavam is a showpiece of CMA’s incomparable organizational ability and talent.
Malayalees- the highly literate, cultured and peace-loving people are considered
as the “immigrant” or travelling community. They have presence in every nook and corner of the world.
Onam is the occasion when the immigrant sons and daughters of Kerala visit their homeland same as their legendry king Mahabali
visits Kerala from his “immigrant land” pathalam, the Nether world or Hades in the Greek mythology ). Every Malayalee
is considered him/herself as a Mahabali! Hence, there is no surprise that Malayalees all over the world celebrate Onam with
high spirit and enthusiasm. Canadian Malayalees and their association (CMA-Canadian Malayalee Association) is always one-step
ahead of others in celebrating Onam. To introduce and nurture traditional values of Malayalees to the young generation, give
the maximum entertainment and delicious traditional food, to strengthen the unity among Malayalees and to integrate them to
the Canadian Community are the goal behind CMA’s Onam celebration. Yearlong preparation, dedicated volunteers, wholehearted
support of the Malayalee community, sister communities, Indian Consulate, Panorama India help CMA to make the CMA Onam celebration
a mega event. There is no surprise that CMA’s Onam celebration is regarded as the largest non-religious Malayalee gathering
in Canada.
To go with the tradition, CMA Onam celebration also begins with Athapookalam
competition. Teams from different parts of GTA participate in the floral decoration competition. It is a visual treat to the
public and a “talent show” for the participants. The unique Onam painting competition challenges children and adults
their knowledge about Onam concept and their artistic skills. The wide response to the competition shows that the Malayalee
community is still haunted by the memories of Onam.CMA is always committed to serve the best Onasadhya at the most reasonable
and affordable rate. Thousands of people participate in the grand feast every year.Onam feast is a feast to our eyes also.
Madras palace, a Toronto based South Indian restaurant chain, is the hand behind this Onam feast. To recognize the beauty
of Kerala Dressing style, CMA is giving award every year to the best traditionally dressed men, women and child with
the support Admiral Tours and Travels.
The highly talented local Malayalee singers and the musicians of CMA Beats-Orchestra
entertain the audience with their melodies and fast numbers. The concert is a mix of classical, film and pop music of various
languages around the world. Their three-hour musical show is a wonderful experience for the audience.
The highly skilled CMA Chendamelam(the traditional percussion performance) team
is another biggest attraction of CMA. Due to the outstanding performance of the Chendamelam team, other communities
in Canada nicknamed CMA as Chenda Melam Association! CMA’s chendamelam is now a main item in many Canadian functions.
CMA chendamelam used to perform for Carassauga, Panorama, Churches and for many cultural festivals. The Malayalee community
is thankful to the Chendamelam team for introducing Chenda and making it recognized by other communities in Canada.
